The word "fate" comes from the Latin word, "fatum", meaning, "that which has been spoken", or "prophetic declaration".  This comes from the past participle of the verb, "fari", which means to speak.  Basically fate means predestination or decided upon by the Kings, Lords, God, or some set of higher entities or powers often flippantly labeled as, "Gods".
